Year 6 – Rhinos

Spring Term 2026

In writing this term, we will be working based on the story of The Three Little Pigs. We will begin with visual literacy – a video that suggests this is actually a tale of insurance fraud! The pupils will be writing a letter of persuasion in defence of the pigs. After that, we will be writing narratives based on a twisted tale of the story, showing that it was all an accident and that the Big Bad Wolf is actually a very kind and softly-spoken character who is greatly misunderstood!

Our class reading text this half term will be Holes by Louis Sachar. This is always a fantastic read for our Y6 pupils!

In maths, we will begin by learning how to read, record and calculate using ratio. Following this, we will be developing our understanding of expressions, formulae and substitution as part of algebra. We will continue consolidating the four operations and we will be learning about percentages and decimals to follow on from our previous fractions unit.

Foundation Subjects

In history, we will be learning about the causes of, and the significance of, the English Civil war. We will be evaluating a range of sources and interpretations to form our opinions.

In art this term, we will be developing our painting skills, looking at the skills and work of Georges Seurat.

In science, our topic will be Evolution.

In geography, our focus will be on global biomes, following on from our previous unit.

Autumn Term 2025:

I hope that you all had the best summer are well rested and ready for the last of your primary years! Mr Ryan is the class teacher (the photo above is not of me before you ask!). Mrs Bradley teaches Forest School and also provides cover teaching some afternoons, as well as being a fantastic Classroom Support Professional (CSP). Mrs Summerton is also a brilliant CSP, providing academic support as well as emotional support for pupils in our class and across the school. Finally, Mr Cuff is our final helpful CSP, supporting pupils in the class as well as providing expert coaching in PE lessons.

We have some enthralling topics to learn about this year! We will begin Year Six writing by using the book The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse as our writing stimulus. We will be examining how Charlie Mackesy creates positive and powerful imagery through his use of figurative language. We will be replicating this, as well as using fronted adverbials, subordinate clauses, relative clauses, metaphors and similes to write an amazing setting description! I look forward to sharing some of our writing with you on Seesaw!

In reading, our class text will be Strange Star – a gothic thriller written by the fantastic Emma Carroll! Emma Carroll is our key author in Year Six; her historical fiction is highly entertaining as well as raising awareness of famous people or situations from the past.

In maths, we will begin with the place value of numbers up to 10,000,000. We will be learning to read, say and write numbers, recognising the value of each digit within those numbers. We will be rounding any integer up to 10,000,000 and we will also be working with negative numbers and Roman numerals. As usual, we will develop our mathematical fluency and arithmetic skills, but we will continue to focus on developing our reasoning skills and learning to solve problems by employing a systematic approach.

Foundation Subjects

In DT this term, we will be focussing on food. Linked to our topic of WWII (which will be later in the academic year), we will be researching, designing, making and evaluating budget friendly pasties – reminiscent of ‘making do’ during that time.

In art this term, we will be focussing on drawing and portraits, inspired by the work of Sir John Tenniel. We will look at his famous works (such as those used for Alice in Wonderland), looking at techniques he used to create perspective.

In science, our topic will be Animals (including humans). We will be looking at systems such as the make up of and the functions of the circulatory system.

In Geography, our focus will be on biomes and map skills.

During PE lessons, we will be developing our invasion games skills by learning to play tag rugby: we will develop our throwing and catching skills, as well as learning how to dodge defenders. Additionally, in dance, we will learn the routine of the Haka, famously used to intimidate opponents before international rugby fixtures!
