Summer


English

Leo and the Gorgon’s Curse

We will be diving into the adventurous world of Leo as he faces danger, mystery and magical creatures in Leo and the Gorgon’s Curse.
Using the story as our stimulus, we will explore Leo’s thoughts and feelings as he deals with the challenges put before him. We will build up to writing a diary entry from Leo’s point of view, describing one of the dramatic moments from his quest.
101 Dalmatians

We will be stepping into the charming and adventurous world of 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith, discovering the lives of the spotted puppies and the people who care for them.
Using the story as our inspiration, we will learn all about what Dalmatians need to stay healthy, happy and safe. We will use this knowledge to write a non-chronological report explaining how to look after a Dalmatian. After exploring how to care for these energetic dogs, we will move on to creating our own narrative inspired by the adventures in the book.
Maths

In maths this term, we will be learning to understand decimals as tenths and hundredths, as well as ordering and comparing them. We will also convert between pounds and pence to compare different amounts of money. Our work on time will include converting between analogue and digital clocks and using the 24-hour clock. We will learn to identify, compare and understand angles, explore properties of 2D shapes and investigate symmetry. In statistics, we will interpret charts and line graphs, and in geometry we will plot coordinates on grids and translate shapes to new positions.
In Year 4, we work really hard towards learning all of our times tables reading for our end of year MTC. Here are some games and songs you can use at home:
Foundation subjects

Our science topics will be sound and states of matter.
In history, we will be continuing to learn all about the Ancient Mayans and then learn about the history sportsmanship.
During our art lessons, we will be completing our painting topic, focusing on Keith Haring, and then we will be moving onto printing, focusing on Cath Kidston.
In R.E., we will be looking at Christianity, looking at when Jesus left and what the impact of the Pentecost was.
Our French lessons will be looking at food and weather.
In P.S.H.E., we are learning about our citizenship and then transitions and wellbeing.
Our computing sessions will be exploring spreadsheets and effective searching as part of our online safety.
During P.E., we will be learning kwik cricket skills and developing our swimming techniques.
Spring


English

How to Train Your Dragon

We will be diving into the exciting world of young Hiccup as he embarks on his dragon-training journey in the book How to Train Your Dragon.
Using the book as our stimulus, we will first write a job application letter, applying to become a dragon trainer. Then, we will write a non-chronological report about the different types of dragons Hiccup might encounter on his journey.
Maths

In maths, we will be continuing to develop our understanding of multiplication and division, length and perimeter, fractions and decimals.
In Year 4, we work really hard towards learning all of our times tables reading for our end of year MTC. Here are some games and songs you can use at home:
Foundation subjects

Our first science topic will be electricity.
In geography, we will be learning at volcanoes, especially The Ring of Fire in South America.
In history, we will be learning all about the Ancient Mayans.
During our art lessons, we will exploring collage and focusing on the work of David Wightman. Then we will be painting and focusing on the artist Keith Haring.
In R.E., we will be develop our understanding of Islam and thinking about how festivals and worship show what matters to Muslims.
Our French lessons will develop our vocabulary in clothing and the weather.
In P.S.H.E., we are learning about health and wellbeing and our changing bodies.
In our computing sessions, we will be exploring the world of coding and spreadsheets.
During P.E., we will be refining our throwing and catching skills and taking part in outdoor adventurous games.
Autumn
English

Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears

In English, we will start by investigating the wonders of the book Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears by Emily Gravett. It is a picture book containing surprise flaps and fold outs, and lots of little details. The pictures follow the fears of a small mouse- from loud noises and the dark, to being sucked down the plughole.
Using the book as our stimulus, we will be exploring emotions and creating a descriptive account of what it feels like to be scared.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

We will then start exploring the adventures of young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka in the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Using the book as our stimulus, we will be writing a set of instructions to find an infamous Golden Ticket and then we will write a spin-off scene with a focus on using speech.
Maths

In maths, we will be continuing to develop our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to 10,000, as well as exploring addition and subtraction skills later on this term.

In geography we will be looking at mountains, comparing them in the UK and in Europe. Our music lessons link to this topic.
In history, we will be learning all about the Ancient Greeks.
During our art lessons, we will be drawing our own self-portraits and we will be looking at the artist Emily Gravett.
In R.E. we will be looking at Hinduism, what that means and what they do.
Our French lessons will include French food, ordering food from a restaurant, Euros and shopping in a supermarket.
In P.S.H.E., we are learning about relationships, friends and family.
Our computing sessions will be exploring online safety such as how to search online and understanding appropriate online behaviours.
During P.E., we will be refining our passing skills in football and practicing our gymnastics skills.
