We’re excited to be part of OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning), starting in May — a brilliant programme that helps schools make playtime more fun, active and creative for every child. OPAL is used in thousands of UK schools and is all about giving children the best possible play experiences every day.
Why OPAL?
Children today spend lots of time on screens and not enough time playing outside. OPAL helps us change that by turning playtimes into active, imaginative and social experiences.
Play makes up around 20% of a child’s school life, so improving it really matters.
What Will Playtime Look Like?
- More to do and explore across the whole school grounds
- Loose‑parts play (like crates, pots, fabrics) for building and creating
- All‑weather fun — children may get muddy or messy, and that’s okay!
- More friendships as children mix across ages and try new activities
Schools taking part often see happier children, fewer accidents, better behaviour, and calmer lunchtimes.
How Parents Can Help
- Make sure your child has clothes they can play in
- Donate any useful items for play (e.g., pans, wellies, fabric, crates)
- Join in events to see OPAL in action!
We’re really looking forward to giving children the amazing playtimes they deserve.
